Tattoo & Onsen Guide

Everything you need to enjoy onsen and public baths with tattoos in Japan.

Why are tattoos banned?

In Japan, tattoos have been historically associated with yakuza (organized crime groups). For decades, members of these organizations used full-body tattoos as a symbol of loyalty and identity. Because of this, many onsen, sento (public baths), gyms, and pools introduced blanket bans on all tattoos — they simply cannot distinguish fashion tattoos from gang-related ones.

Attitudes are gradually changing, especially in tourist-heavy areas. More facilities now offer alternatives like tattoo covers or private baths. But the default at most traditional onsen is still "no tattoos," so it's important to check before you go.

Tips for Tattooed Visitors

🩹

Cover options

Many onsen sell special waterproof covers (foundation sheets) at reception. Ask for "tattoo cover" when you arrive.

🚪

Private bath / Family bath

You can rent a private bath — called kashikiri-buro (貸切風呂) or "family bath." No tattoo rules apply in private baths, and they're great for families or anyone who prefers privacy. Search for "Private Bath" or "Family Bath" on booking sites.

🏨

Ryokan option

Book a ryokan with in-room onsen. Complete privacy guaranteed.

Small tattoos

If your tattoo is roughly palm-sized or smaller, some facilities may allow entry — especially if it can be covered with a foundation sheet. However, this is always at the facility's discretion, so call ahead to confirm.
